Hit the Trail

Hit the Trail

What would you expect a four-and-three-quarter-year-old to say at the end of a four-and-a-half-mile hike that she just finished using her own two feet? “What a wonderful day,” Sofi announced when we walked past the old Tavern (that I was wishing was still a tavern) at Great Falls National Park.

NCPC to Review Eisenhower Memorial Concept Designs, Georgetown Waterfront Park

This story comes to us from Stephen Staudigl:

At its monthly meeting on Thursday, February 3 at 12:30 p.m., the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) will provide comments on three concept designs for the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial. Submitted by the National Park Service, the memorial honoring America’s 34th president will be located on a four-acre site south of Independence Avenue, SW across from the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

The Commission also will review final site development plans for Phase III of the Georgetown Waterfront Park. At its January meeting the Commission deferred consideration of the National Park Service’s plans to allow time for the Park Service to research the feasibility and appropriateness of replacing Sycamore trees already planted in the park with another size and/or species of tree. There will be no staff presentation for this project.

"Half Street" Developments Still On Deck in Navy Yard

"Half Street" Developments Still On Deck in Navy Yard

It’s 10 a.m. on a Friday, and there are familiar sounds that fill the air outside of the Navy Yard Metro station stop in Southeast.  It’s the sound of wind whipping against the wood board advertisements for Half Street.  It’s the sound of an empty soda can rolling to and fro on the construction lot, clinking as it moves.  It’s the sound of a ghost town.

And it’s these sounds, these notes of nothingness, that serve as an eerie reminder that Half Street, one of the city’s biggest development projects, still has not come to fruition.

Comedy Central Hits the Road and Comes to DC

The Countdown to Sanity and/or Fear Rally hits its 3 day mark today, as Comedy Central prepares for this "big tailgate disguised as a rally." So is this about politics or is it just part of a Comedy Central stunt? Opinions go both ways.

Yesterday, WUSA9's reporter Lindsey Mastis had the chance to talk to Larry Wilmore, one of the Daily Show's correspondents at the Shakespeare Theatre in Chinatown. The Shakespeare Theatre is hosting Comedy Central this week and audience members were lining up outside early yesterday afternoon for the taping of the Daily Show. Tonight's special guest is President Barack Obama.
